KIVA Project

The Chagrin Highlands Rotary Club began an International Service project with an initial $500.00 on September 28, 2012.

This project was set up to work with Kiva, a non-profit organization with a mission to connect people through lending to alleviate poverty. Leveraging the internet and a worldwide network of microfinance institutions, Kiva lets individuals and Rotary Clubs like ours lend as little as $25 to help create opportunity around the world.

Kiva was founded in 2005.  At the time of this writing, 923,768 people, companies, and groups like our Rotary Club have become Kiva lenders making $425,671,750 in loans that have had a 99.03% Repayment rate!  More information about Kiva can be found at http://www.kiva.org.

In the first 6 months of our working with Kiva, our initial $500.00 was used to make 32 loans to families and individuals in 16 countries around the world.  During the initial 6 months many of these loans were repaid and the fund grew allowing us to make a total of $815.34 in loans.  At the end of March 2013, the club’s board of directors were so impressed with these results and the benefits to so many families, it was decided to put an additional $500.00 into the Kiva project.
